Virginia's Gov. McDonnell wants an answer from Napolitano (287g)

Virginia's Gov. McDonnell wants an answer from Napolitano (287g)... now
On Friday, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) stated publicly that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is dragging its feet in their decision on whether or not to grant Virginia police officers the authority to deport illegal aliens. Gov. McDonnell said: "The unfortunate reality is that ICE is underfunded and understaffed to adequately manage the detention and deportation of criminal illegal aliens without the assistance of well-trained state partners.

VA: McDonnell presses feds for state immigration-enforcement authority... A number of VA localities have forged 287(g) agreements with DHS, including the cities of Manassas and Herndon and the counties of Loudoun, Prince William, Rockingham and Shenandoah. “We must retain the right to remove the most dangerous illegal aliens from our borders, and 287(g) agreements have been approved across the country for that purpose,” “VA must have the ability to exercise this authority statewide.”

House Votes to Preserve 287(g) Program

House Votes to Preserve 287(g) Program...The House overwhelmingly defeated an amendment to the 2012 Homeland Security spending bill offered by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) that would have defunded the 287(g) program. The amendment was defeated 107-to-312....The 287(g) program provides for training of state and local police officers by federal immigration enforcement agents. Local officers who complete the program can then enforce federal immigration laws at the local level. Rep. Polis' amendment would have stripped more than $5 million of funding for the program from the Homeland Security spending bill...Republicans unanimously opposed Rep. Polis' amendment, while Democrats were divided with 107 supporting the amendment and 81 opposing it.

TN: Fewer deportations put 287(g) immigration program at risk...Though the number of illegals caught in the program has declined, a Tennessean analysis of 287(g) data shows that the top five charges illegals faced in 2010 continued to be traffic or minor crimes. Driving without a license, DUI, implied consent violations, failing to show up to court and misdemeanor warrants made up 56% of the charges filed, higher than in prior years.

Coweta County, GA: Sheriff working to identify illegals

Coweta County, GA: Sheriff working to identify illegals
The conversation about how to get a handle on illegal immigration is continuing on the local, state and federal levels. Currently, Georgia HB87 geared at cracking down on illegal immigration in the state is awaiting Gov. Nathan Deal's signature. "The legislation would enhance our ability to ask more questions of people about their legal status," said Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager..Yeager is also still pushing for Coweta County's enrollment in the Immigration and Nationality Act Section 287(g) program, which permits designated officers to perform immigration law enforcement under the supervision of a federal agent assigned to the community.
Thus far, however, there have been no federal appropriations for the program. Yeager says that, for now, Secure Communities is the best alternative.

FL: Miami mayor opposes proposed immigration-enforcement bills

FL: Miami mayor opposes proposed immigration-enforcement bills.. City of Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado says he opposes the current proposed state legislation on immigration enforcement.. SB2040 would mandate the use of E-Verify, a federal employee eligibility-verification program, as well as require local law enforcement to establish Section 287(g) agreements with the federal government. Section 287(g) is a controversial immigration-enforcement program that authorizes local law officers to enforce federal immigration law. HB7089 also mandates E-Verify, local-federal immigration enforcement and makes being illegal in Florida a misdemeanor and allows an officer to arrest a person without a warrant, if “the officer has probable cause to believe that the person to be arrested is unlawfully in the United States.”

Dream Act Is Dead On A National Level: Security Being Pushed Locally

Dream Act Is Dead On A National Level: Security Being Pushed Locally...DHS promoting Secure Communities and 287 g, federal programs that encourage the cooperation of local, county and state police with federal immigration enforcement activities. The use of E-Verify and the prosecution of employers of illegal aliens have also increased.
