TN: Illegal immigration bill put on hold.. HB1380

TN: Illegal immigration bill put on hold.. HB1380.."Lawful Immigration Enforcement Act" measure postponed until 2012..the estimated $3 million cost of implementing the bill was a major factor in the decision to delay. The sponsors also said they expect to renew their effort next year, likely after some modifications..bill calls for state and local law enforcement officers, when stopping a person for traffic offenses or any other law violation, to check the legal status of the person if there is a "reasonable suspicion" that the individual is in the country illegally. It also sets up a training program for enforcement of immigration laws...HB1378, which would require Tennessee businesses to use the federal "E-Verify" system to check the legal status of prospective employees..cost has been reduced to about $91,000 by reducing the number of employees involved, and Gov.Haslam has covered that cost in a revised state budget plan formally submitted to the Legislature this week. (Gov. will sign if passed).... HB1379, would require state and local government officials to verify that applicants for public benefits.. estimate about $1 million and would not be mandatory..changes being considered for passage.

TN: Illegals in Memphis Fear Arizona Immigration Laws are Coming... Three immigration type bills passed on Wednesday. HB1378 will require Tennessee employers to use the federal "E-Verify" program to prove their employees are here legally. That bill will cost the state an annual $81,100 to fund. HB1379 will affect state programs, like food stamps, TennCare, or unemployment insurance. In order to receive those benefits, applicants will need to prove their citizenship status. That bill carries a price tag of $1.5 million. The third bill, HB1380, will give power to police to question a person's immigration status after being pulled over for any kind of traffic stop. That bill has a $3-million price tag.

Tennessee can't afford to ignore illegal immigration

Tennessee can't afford to ignore illegal immigration..Is Tennessee too poor to keep illegal aliens off the streets? That, in essence, is the argument against implementing various laws in this session of the Legislature that seek to target these criminals. One measure in particular, HB1380, sponsored by Rep. Joe Carr, R-Lascassas, would allow state and local law enforcement officers to check the legal status of suspected illegal aliens during stops for traffic violations and other offenses. Those individuals who were here illegally would be turned over to federal authorities. It’s virtually identical to a law passed by the Arizona Legislature last year.
