TX: Sanctuary cities bill SB9 appears to be dead

TX: Sanctuary cities bill SB9 appears to be dead...Controversial legislation prohibiting "sanctuary city" policies in Texas appeared dead Monday after a House committee refused to report the measure out and Senate conferees on a separate fiscal matters bill refused to let it be included as an amendment. As the special session headed toward its last day on Wednesday, there was no other avenue for the sanctuary cities measure to get legislative approval despite the fact that it was a priority for Gov. Rick Perry and legislative leaders.

"If they don't come and get him, how long do we hold him or what," said Robert Timmons, executive director of the Alabama Sheriffs' Association. "Those are questions we need to know and we need to find out about it."

Federal Judge Blocks parts of Indiana's New Immigration Law

Federal Judge Blocks parts of Indiana's New Immigration Law...U.S. District Judge Sarah Evans Barker on Friday granted a request for an injunction blocking provisions of the law. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Indiana and the National Immigration Law Center sued the state in May, contending the law gives police sweeping arrest powers against illegal aliens who haven't committed crimes. The state attorney general's office argued such fears were exaggerated, but Barker previously said she was concerned about how police officers would enforce the new law. Indiana's new law also includes a provision making it illegal for illegal aliens to use ID cards (fake Matricula I.D. cards given to illegals) issued by foreign consulates as proof of identification. The ACLU said that measure would interfere with foreign treaties allowing the cards.

Dalton, GA: City will continue to use road blocks...Concerns from Dalton’s Latino community about roadblocks in the city broadened into a law enforcement civics lesson Wednesday night at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Police Chief Jason Parker answered questions about why the controversial law enforcement practice will continue -- and what role they play in keeping crime down...“During road blocks, people of all color and ethnicity travel through (them),” he said. “We’re not looking for particular people.”...road checks were helpful for finding suspects with outstanding warrants for robberies, burglaries and thefts, and that traffic concerns ranging from DUIs to seat belt violations and children improperly buckled in or not restrained could be addressed.

If business owners fail to use the system or if they intentionally employ illegal workers, they could be shut down..the bill is headed to Gov. TX: SB9 advances (Secure Communities Program)

TX: SB9 advances (Secure Communities Program)...Sen. Tommy Williams(R) said by expanding Secure Communities to all law enforcement agencies — every Texas county takes part in the program but some municipalities don't — SB9 closes a loophole that keeps some people arrested for Class C misdemeanors from being entered into the Secure Communities database... Secure Communities checks the fingerprints of those arrested against an ICE database. It has been the target of criticism from some who say the program, designed to deport violent criminals, has led to the deportation of people convicted of minor crimes.

There will never be another Father's Day for these police officers
On Father's Day, most of us reflect on good times spent with our dads, and many of us enjoy the day with our own children. However, for some, this day evokes the painful memory that their father or son who protected their community was killed by someone who should have never been in this country

Lawmakers Fight for More Eyes Above Texas-Mexico Border

Lawmakers Fight for More Eyes Above Texas-Mexico Border.. They want more aerial surveillance for the region. There are currently four UAVs, or unmanned aerial systems, assigned to the southern border. Three are based in Arizona, and most recently, one now based in Corpus Christi is classified as a maritime unit. The bill directs the Army, National Guard and the Air National Guard to design and build a hangar on the southwest border that would house UAVs. The high-tech systems would support the National Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and other law enforcement. Lawmakers say that while AZ shares less than 400 miles of border with Mexico, Texas has about three times the area to cover.
