Massachusetts: Martha's Vineyard's illegal alien 'secret'...It is known as the idyllic summer playground of America's wealthy liberal elite that has enchanted Democratic US presidents from John F. Kennedy to Obama...The island has just 16,535 permanent residents, and half of its houses are second homes. But the population rises to 100,000 in summer, when home-owners and tourists arrive for its unspoiled beaches and peaceful greenery. Since the mid-1980s, the out-of-season population has been propped up by Brazilian immigration. Almost a third of new babies born on the Vineyard are now born to Brazilian mothers. The local Brazilian association says there are 3,500 Brazilians living there – about four times more than recorded by official figures. Analysts say this is because many are there illegally.
