Escondido, CA: 477 arrests made in year-old Escondido police, federal program

Escondido, CA: 477 arrests made in year-old Escondido police, federal program..police partnered with immigration enforcement, and the police chief says it’s contributed to a safer community, while activists maintain the program is divisive and unnecessary. Operation Joint Effort was launched in May 2010 to help identify and arrest criminal illegal aliens, those who have been previously deported, have a criminal history or are immigration fugitives. 3 ICE agents are based at Escondido police headquarters to assist when a person who is detained cannot produce proper identification or is known to the officer as prior criminal deportee..“I’m pretty comfortable that violent crime is down and a big reason is this program,” Chief Jim Maher said. Among the 477 arrests, 65 had drug convictions, 44 had assault convictions, 11 had sexual assault convictions, 126 have DUI convictions and 16 have gang-related convictions, according to numbers released this week. Nineteen have been arrested in Escondido multiple times.
