AZ: Sheriff Joe Arpaio Launches 'Operation Desert Sky' To Battle Smugglers
Sheriff Joe Arpaio today announced 'Operation Desert Sky' - a large-scale offensive using 30 'Posse Pilots' and aircraft as spotters, combined with a ground SWAT team with M-16s and the Sheriff's 50-caliber machine gun. The objective is to effectively cut off drug and human smugglers entering the SW and SE desert corridors of Maricopa County from Mexico across the Arizona desert. This is in response to continued activity from those smugglers, despite claims by DHS and other Federal officials of reduced activity
